


Annual Convention
The Lancashire and North West Beekeepers Association Annual Convention was held on Saturday October 28th 2006 at :-
Smithy Lane,
Scarisbrick,
Ormskirk,
L40 8HH.
Speakers
This years guest speakers will be Graham Royle from the Cheshire Beekeepers Association and Dr Dorian Pritchard of SICCAM
Graham Royle NDB will be giving two talks entitled 'The Language of the Honeybee' in the morning and 'Beekeeping Should be Fun
Dr Dorian Pritchard will be also giving two talks entitled 'Bee Breeding on a Small Scale' in the morning and 'Preparing for Winter' in the afternoon.
Exchange and mart
There will be a selection of second-hand equipment, books and magazines available to purchase. Please feel free to bring along any spare equipment you would like to sell. During the lunch break there will be stalls in the entrance selling home-made jams, pickles, fudges, hand-made soaps and lotions and a selection of plants.

Lunch will consist of homemade soup, crusty bread and homemade jam and cakes. It will cost an extra £3.00 on top of the admission price. A small fee will be charged for tea, coffee and home made cakes during breaks.
Graham Royle 'The Language of the Honeybee'
Communication by bees including dancing and pheromones. Why do bees communicate? How do they communicate? Senses of the bee, communication by dancing, during swarming, by use of pheromones.
Dr Dorian Pritchard ' Bee Breeding on a Small Scale'
Even with only half a dozen colonies we can create major genetic improvements amongst our bees. Re-queening mediocre stocks from the best. Promoting production of grandsons from previous best queens.
Dr Dorian Pritchard 'Preparing for Winter'
Winter physiology and formation of winter clusters. Cluster behaviour and environmental temperatures.
Graham Royle 'Beekeeping Should be Fun'
Queen rearing to improve stocks and hence enjoyment of the craft. Why rear queens, how to select breeder colonies, record keeping, methods to rear queens, making up nuclei (including Apidea), queen introduction.
