About the course

Our course uses the British Beekeepers Associations (BBKA) Introduction to Beekeeping teaching

materials. The courses objectives will allow people to:


Be able to understand the workings of a beehive

Understand the life cycle of a honeybee

Understand what is involved in keeping bees

To make an informed decision as to whether beekeeping is for them.


We only run one course per year, over one weekend, with a maximum of 40 places available

The course fee for 2010 is £75.00. This includes:


Membership of Southport & Formby Beekeepers

 AND full membership of the BBKA

 Practical sessions with members

 Six copies of the BBKA news per year

 BBKA public & product liability insurance

Each student will need to bring their own protective footwear (wellingtons) and a pair of marigold washing up gloves or disposable gloves. Protective bee suits & veils will be loaned to students. Hive tools & beekeepers smokers will be available.


Programme

DAY ONE

9.00am Registration Tea/coffee

9.45am Refresher on bees and hives

10.45am Break

11.00am Swarm control

12.00pm Lunch

1.00pm Pests & Diseases

2.00pm Break

2.15pm Beekeeping Year

3.15pm Finish

DAY TWO

9.45am Honey & other products of the hive

10.45am Break

11.00am Making a frame/ assembling a flat pack hive

12.00pm Lunch

1.00pm Hive opening (weather permitting)

2.00pm Break

2.15pm Questions

3.15pm Close

There will be a 15 minute break morning and afternoon and a one hour lunch break each day. Lunch will be provided, tea/coffee and biscuits during the breaks.


LIVE BEES

We will have an observation hive for all, or part of the weekend. There will be a hives on site for the weekend and, weather permitting, we will open the hives on the Sunday
